Woman in Construction: Construction Tech with Carolyn Chasteen

1.     What attracted you to your role/position in the construction industry?

answer:     I began working with a homebuilder in Denver and they were looking to revolutionize technologies for all homebuilders by integrating best of breed applications.  The project was long and there were many triumphs and tribulations along the way, but at the end of the day, we worked together and developed an ERP system that is still used today, twenty-five years later.  I was able to use this experience working with a homebuilding software developer five years later to create another fully integrated ERP platform for residential homebuilders.

2.     What are your goals for the next 24 months?

answer:     Times change and another ERP solution has been identified as the current best of breed application for today and well into the future.  I will be working with the two software vendors to create a different ERP solution for homebuilders.  Over the next two years, my plan is to convert our current customer base to the new solution and continue to sell and market to all homebuilders in the Northern United States and Canada.

3.     What would you say to other women in construction about breaking the glass ceiling?

answer:      Construction has been under serviced by technology providers for years.    Construction companies are looking for trusted advisers who understand their business and can help them develop strategies to maximize resources and reporting that help them respond quickly to maintain their competitive advantage.  Women who can embrace the nuances of planning through financial reporting for construction have an open door in this industry.

4.     What motivates you to work and play hard in this industry?

answer:      Accounting for the construction industry is specialized and requires a unique skill set to properly maintain the records of companies in this industry.  I spent many years learning the ins and outs of issues facing the construction industry and have mastered the skills needed to be a true business advisor to customers.

5.     Do you have a quote, mindful practice or inspiration that guides you forward?

answer:      I always treat customers the way I want to be treated.  I realize they are people too and have good days and bad days.  I like to say, “we work with our customers, not for them”.

6.     Tell us about one of your wins or victories.

answer:      I was working with a builder in California who was running their business on excel spreadsheets and QuickBooks.  During the implementation of a complete ERP system for this builder, we discovered they were losing money on almost all the options they offer to homebuyers.  We demonstrated the impact of the option pricing model to the bottom line of the business.  Management changed how they priced options and their net profit per lot went from almost 14% to 17.5%.

7.     How does your company impact others?

answer:      DC Tech Group assists our customers with completing their digital transformation which optimizes their bottom line.
