Unlocking the Future of HVAC Design with Unico System’s High-Velocity Product

In today's marketplace on Offsite Dirt, innovation is key, especially when it comes to HVAC systems that define comfort and efficiency. Today, I’m excited to share insights from a conversation with Stewart Intagliata, one of the owners and design specialists at The Unico System, a company renowned for its high-velocity, small-ductwork systems. Unico has been a leader in HVAC design and installation for over 40 years, bringing their expertise to both commercial and residential applications.

A Legacy of Expertise in HVAC Design

Stewart’s background is deeply rooted in the world of HVAC contracting, giving him a unique perspective on system design. "We were contractors long before we became manufacturers," Stewart explains. This experience has allowed Stewart and his team to understand the intricacies of installing HVAC systems in various settings, from commercial buildings to residential homes. "We’ve done it all—selling, designing, and installing HVAC systems in commercial spaces, residential homes, spot cooling, you name it."

This hands-on experience in the field has shaped how Unico approaches HVAC design today. Stewart highlights how his transition from contracting to design has given him a fresh perspective. "Now, when I design systems, I’m not just looking at the blueprints; I’m thinking about how these systems will actually work in real-world applications."

Innovative Tools and Techniques in HVAC Design

Unico’s approach to HVAC design is both cutting-edge and adaptable. The company uses its own custom design program, which allows for precise calculations of airflow, outlet velocity, and overall system performance. "Our designs are often unique due to the various applications we work on. For example, we’re currently working on a 22,000 square foot home that required innovative solutions to fit the HVAC system within the architect's space constraints."

One notable project involved installing 17 systems in a single home. "One of the challenges was routing the system from the attic to the first floor in a three-story house. We had to break down a three-and-a-half-ton system into smaller components, running it through three separate plenums to fit within the wall space," Stewart explains.

Training and Expanding Modular Construction

Unico System doesn’t just design and install HVAC systems—they also provide comprehensive training to contractors. "After the design phase, we often train contractors on how to install our systems. This can happen on-site, here at our factory, or even online, depending on the project’s location." He shares a success story of a modular builder in Minnesota. "We trained them on-site, and now they’ve incorporated our system into their homes. We’re now on our 70th installation with them." said Stewart.

Unico’s HVAC systems are versatile enough to be used in various construction types, from traditional and custom homes to modular constructions. "We’re seeing our systems being installed more and more in factories, especially in modular construction, but it really depends on the client’s needs," says Stewart.

A Unique Approach to Design and Customer Engagement

Unico’s commitment to customer satisfaction is evident in their willingness to tackle challenging projects. "We’re not afraid of any project, no matter how complex," Stewart states proudly. This attitude reflects in their approach to customer engagement. "We’re always happy to discuss ideas with clients, offering a range of options to help them find the best solution for their needs."

For those looking to learn more about Unico’s HVAC systems or seeking advice on a project, Stewart’s advice is simple: "Just give us a call or send an email. We’re here to help and will gladly share our expertise."
