Five Compelling Reasons to Start Your Workout Routine Today

Brook Hartnett, CEO of Allegiance Personal Training, launched APT with a mission to help people over 40 achieve their fitness goals—a journey inspired by his work with his own mother. In June, during the pandemic, Brook opened this family-owned and operated personalized fitness business in East Hampton, NY, offering both in-person and online programs. Brook collaborates with his mother, Dr. Katherine Mitchell, a social worker and health coach, and his brother, Denis, a recent college graduate.

The company embraces a holistic approach, combining exercise, nutrition, and community support. As a new member, I’ve found myself on a stronger health path after just six weeks, thanks to APT’s team, who make the process far more enjoyable than I anticipated. They chose the name “Allegiance” because, as Brook says, “fitness is all about commitment.”

Meet Brook Hartnett, CEO of APT

Brook’s fitness journey began in his teenage years while playing sports, continuing through college and his time in the Navy. Returning to Long Island’s East End, he began his career as a professional personal trainer, leading both one-on-one sessions and group classes. He quickly realized that personalized training produced the best results, though it isn’t always accessible for everyone.

This realization led Brook to create a unique hybrid approach: a more affordable model that retains the personalization of one-on-one training. At APT, group workouts are small (2-6 people), quick (45-50 minutes), and designed around functional, full-body movement. Every participant receives a customized workout routine tailored to their fitness level and any specific needs. In my case, my workout was adapted to accommodate my foot, shoulder, and knee issues—issues that are already improving thanks to these tailored sessions.

Brook also keeps his equipment minimal, making it easy for clients to continue their routines at home. Today’s workout required just a mat, two bands, free weights, and a box for step-ups. For online sessions, clients need only a box if they already have the other basics at home.

Why Start Now Instead of Waiting Until the New Year?

During our conversation, Brook shared why starting a fitness routine now—rather than waiting until after the holidays—is a powerful choice.

Here are five key reasons:

  1. Now is Better than Later: Delaying something meaningful often means it doesn’t happen. Start now to make the commitment real.

  2. A Healthier Holiday Season: Many of us won’t be able to travel or engage in typical holiday activities this year, so a workout routine can be a fulfilling alternative and a balance to holiday indulgences.

  3. Support a Crucial Sector: Whether you choose to work out safely from home with an online instructor or at a local, CDC-compliant gym, you’re helping to support an industry that needs it now more than ever.

  4. Boost Immunity: Regular exercise strengthens the immune system, which can aid in fighting off various illnesses, including COVID-19.

  5. Combat Loneliness and Anxiety: Exercise not only enhances physical health but also supports mental well-being, especially in these times. A trainer or group workout can provide connection and alleviate feelings of isolation.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
